TTK: Naturally Inspired by the IMA

TTKs are Sky Blue Window's 'Things to Know,' events, ideas and cultural creations that we think are worthy of your time and attention.

Your 15 minutes of creative fame may have arrived, courtesy of the inspiring art and nature at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and a bunch of iPads.

The museum has a great collection in its galleries. But the grounds it sits on, including Oldfields (the former Lilly family estate) and 100 Acres, have masterworks of a different sort. Yes, they contain great outdoor art, but they also showcase the masterful hand of nature and landscape design. It only makes sense that, in addition to the T.C. Steele and Georgia O'Keefe pieces in its collection, the museum might encourage visitors to find inspiration in the woodlands, wetlands, lake and gardens of its grounds.

Following a great reception for the interactive portion of Mattisse: Life in Color, which allowed patrons to create digital art inspired by the French artist's pieces, IMA team members developed a new online art experience -- Inspired by Nature. The program invites visitors to get creatively motivated by work in the galleries and nature throughout the grounds and to come up with their own images in the museum's Davis Lab. A jury of experts will choose monthly winners from submitted pieces, which will then be exhibited both in the Inspired by Nature studio and online.

The contest runs through April 2015. And the iPads are waiting.
