Steampunk -- the Victorian-frontier-science fiction mash-up -- is one of contemporary America's more interesting and interestingly costumed subcultures. Its adherents wear old-timey motorcycle goggles and black lace corsets. They also enjoy mixing up mechanical whirligigs and digital technology. The movement, with sizeable inspiration from H. G. Wells and a rambunctious community of Etsy sellers, is less than a decade old, and they're old-fashioned in a way only made possible by the digital age.

If that's something that intrigues you or if you are, yourself, an enthusiast, you'll want to check out this weekend's "Dark Victorian Romance," presented by the Circle City Aerodrome, Indianapolis' "punkaneers" organization. From Feb. 14 to 16, the "immersion weekend" offers a burlesque cabaret, masquerade ball, workshops, "tea dueling," performances and even an absinthe tasting. The bulk of activities takes place at the historic Columbia Club, and most are free. Costumes are encouraged, as is an open mind about the quirky and creative crowd that is likely to attend.
