TTK: Cash Bash 2014

TTKs are Sky Blue Window's 'Things to Know,' events, ideas and cultural creations that we think are worthy of your time and attention.

"Folsom Prison Blues," "Walk the Line," "Ring of Fire," covers that arguably outshine the originals -- Johnny Cash was more than a singer-songwriter, he was an icon. His deep voice and distinctive stage presence make him darn near impossible to copy. So, for more than 10 years, local bands haven't so much mimicked as paid tribute to him at the annual Johnny Cash Bash on Friday, Feb. 28 at Radio Radio.

The 2014 event features five bands whose styles hit on blues, rockabilly, punk, Latin, and beyond. And that's fitting. Cash is beloved by musicians and music lovers from nearly all genres. The Freightliners started the Cash Bash tradition in 2001. Though the "deiselbilly" band may be gone, one of its original members, Mo Foster, fronts his own band these days. It's called The Next Big Three. Foster and his fellow band mates will be there playing.
