Tonight Encore Vocal Arts' singers plan to bring new life to a cinematic classic. At Footlite Musicals' stage, the chorus will be paired with music from the Hedback-Page Theater Organ as they accompany The Wind. Starring Lillian Gish, "the first lady of cinema," the silent film is recognized as one of the greatest of all time.
One of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's final silent movies before the advent of "talkies," The Wind is a romantic drama that to modern eyes might seem especially outdated in its depiction of women's lives. From stories about how women are likely to be made crazy by the western winds to a central plotline that has Gish as Letty married to a coin-flip-winning suitor, the main character's travails are harrowing. And it only gets worse with scenes that include unwanted advances, a gun and a corpse.
In other words, The Wind and its special soundtrack will offer film buffs, fans of voices raised in song and anyone with a flair -- or appreciation -- of the dramatic a Saturday night of cultural adventure.Tickets are $18 or $15 for students and seniors.
