From Brown Sugar (The Rolling Stones) to Wild Honey (The Beach Boys), Ham 'N' Eggs (A Tribe Called Quest) to Chicken Grease (D'Angelo) -- the kitchen continually sneaks its way into the song-crafting process, as artists from all genres just can't help but reference their taste buds when churning out tunes. At a young age, we are even fed food-infused ditties, from muffin men to little teapots. But what if things were the other way around?
Through an ongoing series of quarterly events known as Avant Brunch, artistic venues welcome local chefs into their midst, giving them the chance to create an exclusive menu inspired by an album or live performance. The tasty meal is then served with its correlative spoonful of tunes, giving the limited audience a multisensory experience where curated food and music enhance one another.
On Saturday, July 19, the Indianapolis Museum of Art's Fesler Gallery will feature local chef Erin Till (from the Libertine) and an advanced listening of the forthcoming My Brightest Diamond album, This Is My Hand (to be released by Asthmatic Kitty Records, a locally based label). Those who attend will receive a limited edition copy of the record upon release, as well as a signed edition of the chef's exclusive menu from that morning.
