A Slam Dunk of an Idea

Portland is so cool that it's forced to make fun of itself. That's the running joke, right? Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein produce a series all about it.

But maybe the Oregon city's hipster and DIY cultures, combined with a robust art and music scene, produce ideas that, I would argue, are worth spreading to Indianapolis. The latest inspiring idea combines basketball and band downtime. Using a hoop attached to a van, 32 Portland bands compete in a "Rigsketball" tournament. The originator of this new version of Indiana's favorite game, drummer Bim Ditson, thinks that the result is more than a wacky mash-up between music and sport. For him, it's a way to build community and collaboration in his local music community.

This video, the fourth in Juliet Zulu's series of Portland profiles, captures the rough-and-tumble nature of the tourney's players. Her website tells some additional parts of the story.

I can't imagine that there's another place other than the Circle City (well, perhaps, Bloomington) so well suited to be the second hotbed for Rigsketball. We have the bands, and what rhythm-oriented musician doesn't appreciate an alley-oop?
