5 Buzz-worthy Shows

My top picks for shows coming up next season

With spring comes the excitement of local theatres and arts groups announcing their new seasons. I have dug through the upcoming season to find 5 buzz-worthy shows to look forward to.

1. Other Desert Cities
Indiana Repertory Theatre, March 12 - April 6 2014

Every year it seems the regional theatre circuit has one hot new play featuring a dysfunctional family. Recent seasons have included August: Osage County, God of Carnage, Clyborne Park (now playing at Phoenix Theatre). Next season we have Other Desert Cities to help make our family dramas look civilized in comparison. Described as "When Brooke Wyeth arrives at her parents' Palm Springs mansion on Christmas Eve with the manuscript of her tell-all memoir in tow she unearths a devastating family secret--throwing her parents into a panic that threatens to rip the clan apart." The show nabbed Tony nominations for leading women Stockhard Channing and Judith Light - I look forward to seeing what local stars the IRT casts in these roles. IRT Season Preview

2. Cole Porter's Anything Goes In Concert
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, May 9, 2014.

Fresh off a 2011 hit revival, Anything Goes will get the ISO musical treatment. Recent seasons have seen wonderful and fun concert productions of Hello Dolly and Hairspray. While most musicals are slimming down the pits to save budget, under the direction of ISO Pops conductor Jack Everly, these concert versions bring Broadway talent to the stage with the full orchestra. It's a spectacle not to be missed.  ISO Season Preview

3. Book of Mormon
Broadway Across Indianapolis, June 17-24

At first glance, Broadway Across Indianapolis season features so many movie-turned-musicals one would think no original musical had been made in years. But look beyond Flashdance, Ghost and Addams Family and you will find Book Of Mormon, the biggest Broadway hit in years. This surprisingly original show was the brainchild of South Park creators, so expect irreverence. Buy tickets early - this one will sell out. Broadway Across Indianapolis Season Preview

4. Love, Shakespeare
Dance Kaleidoscope, August 15-24, 2013 at IndyFringe

Dance Kaleidoscope has boldly chosen to kick off its season at IndyFringe the past two years. While the offbeat festival is better known for discovering emerging acts, DanceKal uses it as an opportunity to find new fans. But it's also proven a great chance for loyal supporters to see them perform in an intimate venue. While not much has been released about this production, I can guarantee you any Dance Kaleidoscope show is worth checking out. Dance Kaleidoscope Season Preview

5. Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Footlite Musicals, January 10-26 2014

In recent seasons, Footlite Musicals has been breaking away from traditional community theatre mainstays. Next season it most surprisingly will perform a little known and edgy musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The show is about a fictional rock and roll band fronted by an East German transgender singer with music inspired by David Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. This could be weirdly fantastic.
