April Preview

Boybands & gentrification play for laughs, while Artsfest heats up Indy's newest performing arts venue this April. Here's 3 events to add to your cultural calendar.

BOYBAND! By Defiance Comedy

April 3 and 17 at the White Rabbit Cabaret

While Justin Timberlake is topping the charts, there's a secret brewing in Indy - we have our very own boyband. One of Indy's newest comedy groups, Defiance Comedy, has invented the live sitcom and their latest one is playing to standing-room-only crowds at Indy's coolest venue, White Rabbit Cabaret.  The concept is simple. Imagine all the cheesy sitcoms of the 80's and 90's, take a talented group of young actors and improvers, and unleash them with an outrageously funny, but loosely practiced script and see what shenanigans ensue. Following the success of Jesus is My Roomie and Mom & Pop Porno Shop, Defiance Comedy has upped the stakes with Boyband! The premise: Brozone, a sad-sack group of adults, whose glory days in college coincided with the glory days of NSync, are ready for their comeback reunion. The original music and choreography is better than anything you will see on Glee or Smash. But be prepared for your jaw to drop a few times as they aren't afraid to go places broadcast censors wouldn't allow. There's only two more episodes of "season one," but with an album already being recorded I wouldn't worry about more chances to see Brozone in the future.

Butler University ArtsFest

April 18-28 Various Venues at Butler University

Butler University is bringing an eclectic line-up of 30 performances in 8 days featuring Butler's terrific arts programs as well as Indy's best performing arts organizations.  Having seen a sneak peak of the Schrott Center For the Performing Arts, I recommend trying to get to any of the performances at this beautiful, intimate new venue. I am most looking forward to seeing Butler Ballet perform here. This won't be any ordinary ballet. They will tackle a two-piano version of The Rite of Spring featuring highly regarded modern dance chorographer Paul Taylor's work. Don't miss it on April 27 at the Schrott Center. Check out the full lineup of events including jazz, drama, visual arts and lectures to find your match.

Clybourne Park

April 4 - May 5, 2013, Phoenix Theatre

The 2012 Tony Award winning play Clybourne Park is the hottest show on the regional theatre circuit this year and Phoenix Theatre snagged the rights for Indianapolis. The play deals with a neighborhood battling gentrification and includes more than a few laughs. Ben Brantley of The New York Times called it, "Ferociously smart! A vital, superlative production of the sharp-witted, sharp-toothed Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy." The Phoenix Theatre has once again secured a cast of some of Indy's best actors. There's no way I am missing this one.
