Working Class Art Collectors

He was a postal worker and she was a reference librarian but the Vogels both loved art and made a decision to collect it. They didn't focus on the popular trends of the time, but sought out artists and art they enjoy and soon they filled their small New York apartment with what is now considered some of the most priceless art.

Today, more than 1,000 pieces of their collection are housed in the National Gallery and they are now working on a Fifty Works for Fifty States project where fifty museums across the country will receive fifty pieces from the Vogel collection. This couple shows that you don't have to be a millionaire to collect art. You just have to like it. A documentary has now been made of their lives and you can read more about their story here, via Mental Floss.
