Sticky Writing

Let’s all take a moment and recall that episode of Friends when Joey was eating jam with a spoon. Wistfully, he said, “Remember when your mom used to drop you off at the movies with a jar of jam and a spoon?” and Rachel just looked at him and said, “You're so pretty.”

Okay, so maybe you had to be there, but Friends + jam = good.

Keeping that sweet treat in mind, let’s think about some luscious words and dive into the Downtown Writers Jam (DWJ)!

(Mmm. Jam.)

There will not be any jam, actors from Friends or poisonous spears at the event. Probably. - COURTESY OF THE GEEKY PRESS

On Wednesday, Nov. 12 -- pause for the “It’s already November?!” freak out -- a local writers' collective called The Geeky Press will convene its second gathering of the DWJ. The event could be called a book reading, but it’s more like Indiana Jones running from the human-smooshing boulder while dodging poisonous spears, AND telling a compelling story. The writers -- Trey Dowell, Erika T. Wurth, Darolyn “Lyn” Jones, Angela Jackson-Brown, Bill Hillman, Ben Tanzer, Sara Nahrwold, Aiste Manfredini, and Amy David -- represent genres including nonfiction, fiction and playwriting. They each get 10 minutes to tell their stories in front of a rapt audience. Who, incidentally, will not have spears. Probably.

Über-cool bookstore Indy Reads Books (911 Mass Ave.) is going to host the event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. So it starts late enough for you to get there from work (or day drinking at a nearby bar) and ends in time for you to get home for: Law and Order SVU. Or more drinking.

Some very cool folks are sponsoring the event, including Barbara Shoup (a rad novelist, teacher and executive director of the Indiana Writers Center), The Geeky Press, Indy Reads Books and small press literature proponents Vouched Books. If you’re intrigued but feeling noncommittal, or just plain old introverted (i.e., “Sounds like a great event, but man, my jammies are comfortable”), check out a teaser video from Volume 1.

Top Three Reasons To Attend:

  • The event will be awesome, relatively short, free and will feature super-awesome writers sharing their work.

  • The evening will likely include post-performance downtime at the Chatham Tap (719 Mass Ave.) for attendees who’d like to meet the writers, organizers, sponsors and compete for Full-Blown Groupie status.

  • There will not be any jam, actors from Friends or poisonous spears at the event. Probably.

RSVP for the free event on Eventbrite and check out The Geeky Press for more jammy goodness.
