Shape Up, Indy

This week's torrential rains that flooded your basement also greened up the dreary landscape, nourishing budding trees and spring flowers. And now as the clouds have finally parted, you find yourself itching for outdoor projects to spiff up your surroundings.

Sky Blue Window has a suggestion for you. Tomorrow after you've tidied your yard and planted your pansy pots, help beautify Indy and create a connection to a community with an awesome public art project anyone can do.

Join Lisa Boyles, Andrew Severns and Izaak Hayes of the Color the World with Love project Saturday (April 11) 1 - 3 p.m., and help paint a new mural along the underpass of E. Ninth Street (between N. Sherman drive and N. Kealing avenue, in the Rivoli Park neighborhood). Instruction will be provided, so no prior artistic experience is required. You can also paint with the group 1- 3 p.m. the following Saturday (April 18) and again on Earth Day (April 22) 5:30-8:30 p.m.

The project was created to bring "harmony through geometry," instilling beauty through art to neighborhoods such as this one on the Near East Side. Public participation not only offers a fun sense of pride for people working together on an awesome art project, but the finished work becomes a source of peace and unity -- a cherished community landmark.

Once the artists outline the geometric shapes, volunteers of all skill levels can paint them in. So they look impressive, plus they create a visual metaphor for community -- many different parts that all fit together to form a very cool collective.
