Pop Lit at Chipotle

In 2013, a paltry 23 percent of Americans didn't finish a book. Almost one in four people didn't read by the flicker of a Kindle, listen to an audiobook or even peruse a paperback while on vacation, according to the Pew Research Center. But 2011 was no more literary for our nation, so at least we can say that things aren't getting worse.

Maybe, though, if we can't pore over novels or great nonfiction tomes, Americans can surely skim some short stories instead. And what better place to do so than at a fast-casual restaurant? The next time you're at Chipotle loading up your burrito bowl with extra guacamole, you'll also have the chance to consume a story by a great writer. According to a new story on Vanity Fair Daily, the chain's drinks will come in paper cups featuring pieces by Malcolm Gladwell, Toni Morrison, Michael Lewis, George Saunders and Jonathan Safran Foer.

The idea actually came to Foer when he dined at Chipotle. While tucking in to his burrito -- which had to have been vegetarian, as Foer is the man who penned the plant-based diet celebration, Eating Animals, -- he thought reading something of substance while taking sustenance would be a nice idea. An email to the eatery's CEO followed, and now customers have the chance to down Dr. Pepper and devour Toni Morrison's "Two-Minute Seduction" at the same time. Bonus points: The cups are also beautifully designed. And Chipotle has added stories to their brown paper bags as well.
