6 Indy Instagrammers Worth Following

Want to know more about the creative process or the realities of an artist's life? While reading profiles is one way to peek behind the studio curtain or listen in on the songwriting process, there's an easier way to accomplish that mission -- your friendly smart phone Instagram app.

Check out these Indianapolis-based artists -- and one bonus expat -- whose photographic feeds showcase works-in-progress, sources of inspiration, artful ways of living and, of course, some cats and sunsets too. They also demonstrate that every creative eye operates in its own individual way.

CHARLES FOX
  • Charles Fox

Fox is a semi-regular arts writer around town, a sideline that has very little to do with his day job. But his eye for artifacts and man-about-town cultural calendar make his feed a local standout. Beyond DIY art events, he specializes in roadside and hand-painted signage, in varying states of decay.

JONATHEN FREY

Frey posts about his projects and his friends, but he also seems to be creating a photographic love story for downtown Indianapolis. Working within the Mile Square, he regularly captures geometry-rich shots from dramatic (rooftop?) vantages.

MAB GRAVES
  • Mab Graves

Graves' art has a following well beyond Indianapolis, as her 17,000-plus Instagram follower base proves. But beyond the numbers, her shots of both her work and her life are full of surprising color choices -- including her hair -- and whimsical but thoughtful slices of reality and fantasy.

SAVANNAH NORRIS

If you love fashion, but want to see the hard work and inspiration that make beautiful sartorial stories possible, Norris' feed is a great place to start. The stylist posts previews of upcoming spreads, as well as behind-the-scenes pics from photo shoots and the gallery at the new multiuse space Maltese Tiger.

MARY ANNE NGUYEN
  • Mary Anne Nguyen

Nguyen recently embarked on an artist challenge -- to create a painting a day. She's documenting that project, which so far includes a Long's Bakery chocolate-covered doughnut, a raw T-bone steak and a wrapped red lollipop, and she continues posting other shots from her life. Regardless of the subject, her pictures look a lot like her paintings with strong composition and the tendency to linger on details.

NAT RUSSEL
  • Nat Russel

Nathaniel Russell

Russell's artwork is nearly perfectly suited for Instragram sharing. His humor, graphic sensibility, pop culture remixing and diverse media (fake signs, drawings, painting on three-dimensional objects, etc.). Followers get images of his process, but more than anything, they get to experience Russell's wit in imagery on a regular basis.

OTIS GIBBS
  • Otis Gibbs

Otis is an Indianapolis transplant who now uses Nashville, Tennessee, as his home base. He's not officially a Circle City guy these days, but we'd be silly not to claim the talented musician as one of our own. From tour stops to under-celebrated music history locations, Gibbs' images are a mix of old-timey Americana and compelling stories -- pretty much the visual version of his songwriting.
